Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Astoria, New York (1841)
The Parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is one of the oldest parishes in Long Island, having been organized in 1841.
At Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, which is well over 100 years old, John Tiedemann Inc. and John Pierce, Liturgical Designer, were commissioned to conduct total paint removal, including exposures of the original paint schemes and decorative paint finishes, extensive plaster replacement, including three-coat and ornamental plaster, full woodwork refinishing, installation of a new decorative paint scheme based on historic colors, extensive stenciling, and restoration of the existing murals after they were uncovered. Six new murals were also commissioned. The results are spectacular, restoring this old church in a way that exceeds its original grandeur.
