Holy Cross Church, New York City (1870)
Founded in 1852, the Church of the Holy Cross was a wooden structure at the current location on West 42nd Street. In 1867, the church was struck by lightning and was severely damaged by the resulting fire. An inspection by architects and builders concluded that the walls had not been properly constructed and were in danger of collapsing, which led to the building of a new church. The present Romanesque edifice was designed by Henry Engelbert and completed in 1870.
John Tiedemann Inc., under the direction of DCAK-MSA Architecture, was commissioned to conduct mural conservation, extensive replacement of the ornamental and flat plaster, faux marble and faux wood restoration, interior painting and extensive stenciling at Holy Cross Church, which is now fully restored to its old grandeur.
